Calculating the Cubic Meter (CBM) of a container involves determining the volume of the container in cubic meters. The formula for calculating CBM depends on the shape of the container. Here are the general steps for calculating CBM for common container shapes:

  1. Rectangular Container:

    • Measure the length (L), width (W), and height (H) of the container in meters.
    • Use the formula: CBM = L x W x H

For example, if a rectangular container has dimensions of 2 meters (length) x 1.5 meters (width) x 1 meter (height), the CBM would be: CBM = 2m x 1.5m x 1m = 3 cubic meters.

  2. Cylindrical Container:

    • Measure the radius (r) and height (H) of the cylinder in meters.
    • Use the formula: CBM = π x r^2 x H, where π is approximately 3.14.

For example, if a cylindrical container has a radius of 1 meter and a height of 2 meters, the CBM would be: CBM = 3.14 x (1m)^2 x 2m = 6.28 cubic meters.

  3. Triangular Container:

    • Measure the base (b), height (h), and depth (d) of the triangular container in meters.
    • Use the formula: CBM = 0.5 x b x h x d

    For example, if a triangular container has a base of 2 meters, a height of 3 meters, and a depth of 1.5 meters, the CBM would be: CBM = 0.5 x 2m x 3m x 1.5m = 4.5 cubic meters.

  4. Irregular Shape:

    • If the container has an irregular shape, break it down into simpler shapes (e.g., rectangles, cylinders) and calculate the CBM for each part. Then, sum up the individual CBMs.

Keep in mind that these calculations assume that all measurements are in the same unit (e.g., meters). Additionally, for shipping containers, the term TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) is commonly used to express container capacity, with one TEU equaling approximately 14 cubic meters.
