JAKARTA, March 10 (Xinhua) - Several days of torrential rain have caused floods and landslides in West Sumatra, officials said on Sunday. Nineteen people were killed and more than 70,000 were evacuated to safety. This is according to a release by Reuters.
Heavy rains have been falling since Thursday in Padang, West Sumatra, and eight other areas, damaging nearly 700 homes, several bridges and schools. 113 hectares of cultivated land was flooded. According to Indonesian officials, rescuers are still searching for seven missing people.
Most areas of Padang are still flooded and more rain is forecast in the coming days.
